The ABS Research Support Center at the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (hereinafter “Korea ABS Research Center”) is the administrative office in charge of bio-resource research under the Ministry of Science and ICT. The center is responsible for carrying out tasks involving overseas export approval in accordance with the Act on Biological Research Resources and the Genetic Resources Act as delegated by the Ministry of Science and ICT, as well as tasks related to domestic implementation of the Nagoya Protocol.

The Korea ABS Research Center has been exclusively handling matters related to ABS (Access and Benefit-Sharing) for the Ministry of Science and ICT, and the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology for over ten years since 2012, even before the Nagoya Protocol took effect internationally in 2014. During this period, the center has been part of the Korean government’s delegation in various international conferences including the Conference of the Parties (COP) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). In addition, it supports researchers from academia, industry, and research institutions by operating the ABS Help-Desk, organizing awareness-raising seminars, and engaging in various other activities.

The Korea ABS Research Center comprises experts in various fields, including biotechnology and international law. With a profound understanding of biotechnology, biological resources, and relevant laws, the center is building a comprehensive perspective and capability essential for interpreting, applying, and implementing the international treaty known as the “Nagoya Protocol.”

The Korea ABS Research Center always strives to actively address any challenges related to the Nagoya Protocol faced by our researchers and to provide the best support to ensure researchers’ compliance with ABS obligations.
